참전용사 초청 TALK

October 2, 2017

It’s a good to see you all. I am the pastor for the Korean Church.

It is a great privilege to have invited you all to our church, especially to the British Korean Veterans who have joined our service today.

We would like to give you a warm welcome and we hope you enjoy your time here.

Last month, I had the opportunity to go to Korea with my two children,

it was their first time in five years to visit Korea

so they had very little memory of what Korea was like, in particular my son.

When we went, we rented a car in order to look around various places in Korea.

We really enjoyed and were so surprised by the modern buildings, beautiful scenery,

the efficiency of the systems , services and various foods, and generally by the high quality of life.

I think Korea has really become an outstanding country.

We were there for twelve days, and by the end of our stay,

my son didn’t even want to come back to England.

He asked “Dad, why did we move to England in the first place?”

and I replied “I had to come for my studies…”

he said “Why didn’t you ask for my opinion? Why didn’t you consult me?”

I said “Oh my son…I’m sorry I didn’t ask you...but at that time,

you were only a two-year-old baby!” After much laughter he stated, “Dad, I’m going to live in Korea.”

That moved me, as previously my son hadn’t shown much regard

or any particular interest towards Korea, but seeing my children interacting with Korea,

it gave me insight about how Korea had flourished into such a well off country.

Today’s Korea is a result of many people’s efforts and sacrifices,

however amongst the many, we cannot forget about those who fought in the Korean war.

Soldiers from 16 different nations participated in the Korean war,

and following America, Britain sent the second largest number of soldiers, approximately 80,000.

Thanks to those who were devoted like yourselves, today’s Korea was able to be in existence.

We sincerely wanted to express our great gratitude and admiration.

When we went to Korea, many of my British friends were concerned for us.

“Pastor Hong, will you be okay if you go to Korea now? What if there is a war?

What about the nuclear weapon testing going on?”

“Thank you for your concern, but what you don’t know about Koreans is that they don’t care

because the tension has been going on for so long.” And to no surprise,

when we were in Korea it was just as I thought, it was very peaceful.

But, there were a few people who were slightly worried. Why?

Well, simply because of the impulsive and unpredictable nature of the North Korean Leader Kim Jung Eun.

He didn’t seem to fear anyone or anything but unluckily for him,

his major opponent in America is an even more impulsive and unpredictable man. I’m sure you know who I’m talking about.

Anyway, this had me thinking, what if there was to be a war? And if there was, would I be willing to participate?

In 100% honesty, I was a bit frightened of the thought of leaving my family to fight and risk my life.

Even though it was for the country I was born and raised in, I was very hesitant.

I can’t begin to comprehend the amount of courage it must have taken to fight for another country.

It can’t have been an easy decision, especially at such a young age.

Thank you again for making a big difference and giving hope and freedom to a nation who really needed your help.

According to the Bible reading, Romans 5:7-8,

“Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man,

though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.”

And this is very true, although not many, there are a few who are willing to die for the greater good

and world peace and those who do, it is a very courageous and meaningful thing to contribute towards.

I cannot fully put into words just how thankful we are.

Rarely, one person might dare to die for some other deserving person,

described in the passage as either ‘righteous’ or ‘good’.

However, God’s love has surpassed the absolute most you could expect in terms of human love

as Christ demonstrated in that He died for the helpless ungodly sinners – the very ones also called God’s enemies.

Not only is it difficult, it is impossible to die for a sinner

but God’s love for us was so great that He sent his beloved Son

and Christ came among us to suffer and die for us.

It is written in the Bible, Matthew 20:28, “the Son of Man came not to be served

but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many”.

It is also written in the Bible, Luke 5;32,

“I have come to call not those who think they are righteous

but those who know they are sinners and need to repent”.

Through His death on the cross, we are able to live.

As I stressed previously, it is a very difficult task to suffer for the greater good.

It is also extremely valuable and meaningful.

In this way, the Korean Veterans who have joined us today deserve great respect and honour.

You fought for a country you didn’t even know and you fought for world peace.

Without your help and your work, the Korea of today would not be able to stand.

You have given us an unforgettable gift and you gave us hope and shaped one country’s future.

Hence, Korea would like to convey their huge thanks and appreciation for you.

But something else we cannot forget is the death of Jesus, which wasn’t for the righteous or the good but for sinners.

God showed his amazing love he has for us.

I hope all of you can experience this love.

Dear Heavenly Father,
You loved us so much that You sent your only begotten son.

Even though, we were sinners Jesus Christ died for us so that we could live.

Thank You that we were able to hear this wonderful gospel of God today.

Please guide us and help each and every one of us here today experience this grace.

Today we have been joined by the war veterans, those, who were willing to suffer and fight for the hope of one Nation.

The Korea of today was built by the effort and sacrifice of the Veterans.

Please bless them with good health and happiness and the belief in Christ so that they can enter the Kingdom of God.

We pray in Jesus name, Amen.
